Abbas Araghchi〔The surname is also transliterated as ''Araqchi''.〕 ((ペルシア語:‌عباس عراقچی), (:ʔæbˌbɒːse æɾɒːɣˈt͡ʃʰi); born 1960 in Tehran) is an Iranian politician and diplomat who is Deputy for Legal and International Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran. He is serving as Iran's chief nuclear negotiator in talks with the P5+1.
Araghchi received B.A. in Diplomatic Relations from Faculty of International Relations in 1989. He received an M.A. in Political Science in 1991 and Ph.D. in Politics & Government from University of Kent in 1995 entitled "The evolution of the concept of political participation in twentieth-century Islamic political thought".
A career diplomat, Dr. Araghchi entered the Foreign Ministry in 1990. He started his work in the International Department and soon upgraded as Deputy Director for Regional Organizations. From 1990 to 1991 he served as Charge' d' Affairs of the Permanent Mission of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Organization of Islamic Conference, based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
From October 1997 to September 1998, Dr. Araghchi was Head of the Center for Persian Gulf and the Middle East Studies at the IPIS, a research institute affiliated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Prior to becoming Ambassador, Dr. Araghchi served from September 1998 as Director General of the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS). Dr Araghchi has worked in the Institute as a Senior Researcher since his return from Britain, where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1995. From 1998 to 1999 Dr. Araghchi was Editor in Chief of the ''Journal of Foreign Policy'', a quarterly journal published by the IPIS.
